General characteristics:
Original place in South America, Brazil, Bolivia, Peru, Costa Rica. Number 2 in Janka International Hardness Scale with no doubt this species are hard enough for flooring. Color At first, red-brown or purple-brown with alight weloow-brown or purple stripes; after exposrue, homogenous light brown or yellow-brown. Grain delicately texture, interlocked, waxy or oily sense. Variants within species and grades. Impressive shading that mellows as the floor ages.
Working Properties:
Being one of the strongest woods on the planet, the wood is hard-fought to saw and bore and will have a moderately high blunting effect on tools. Where severely interlocked grain is not present, the wood planes to a smooth surface. Because of its high concentration and oily nature, the wood glues poorly. It nails and screws well; pre-boring is needed.
Drying and Shrinkage:
Very unstable when used in dry climates and it is prone to shrinkage. It is naturally seasoned and kiln dried to prevent shrinkage. Shrinkage volumetric 12% moisture content: radial 5%; tangential 7.6%.
Durability:
The timbers have a reputation for being really long-lasting, with resistance to both brown-rot and white-rot fungi. The wood has superior weathering possibilities, rated 25 years against decay and insect damage with applications having longevity of over 50 years. Class A fire resistance ranging.
