Some individuals believe that recoating and refinishing are 1 and also the very same thing. But in actual truth nothing could be additional from the reality. Recoating is a much quicker and simpler process than refinishing, and the route you go down is dependent upon the problem your hardwood floor is in.

Recoating – ideal for your hardwood floor that requirements merely a simple touch up

If your hardwood ground has been professionally sanded and taken care of within the past couple of many years, it ought to still be in pretty excellent shape. This indicates you’ll only typically must recoat it every now and then – possibly every couple of years.

In doing so you may give it that additional protection it needs to maintain on looking excellent for numerous much more a long time to arrive. Recoating is perfect when the ground by itself is nonetheless sound. The coating on leading from the ground protects it however it does have a tendency to begin sporting away via use over time. This means you may ultimately have to recoat it to be able to keep it searching good.

Refinishing – perfect for a hardwood floor that truly wants some tender loving care

Not all floors have been cautiously taken care of and protected over the a long time though. Let’s say you move into an old house and commence to renovate it as an example.
This is the type of situation exactly where you should go for a total refinishing of the ground. This entails cleaning it, vacuuming it, seeking protruding nails and countersinking them to stay away from additional harm being carried out and lots much more in addition to. The ground will also need to be thoroughly sanded after which vacuumed once more just before any surface coating may be place down.

So the refinishing method is a great deal more in depth compared to recoating one?

Even if it has been treated before it could have already been numerous many years since it absolutely was last taken treatment of. In the event you move right into a home where the prior owner did not get proper care of their hardwood floors, you can find they will need completely stripping back again and refinishing. It’ll take lengthier to total this type of task, but you may value the better finish result when it really is done.

Maintaining a hardwood floor in prime condition doesn’t take much skill or effort, but it requires consistency and good care on a daily basis. Especially for rooms that experience heavy traffic or are exposed to additional “treatment” from kids and pets, it’s essential that you keep an eye for suspicious stains, marks and spilled or sticky substances.

Since floor are generally separated into wax finished and surface finished, the exact hardwood floor cleaning tips often differ depending on what finish you’re dealing with. Apart from the regular dust-mopping, sweeping and vacuuming with an appropriate extension, you need to know how to take care of “accidents” and minor damage that the floor would inevitably experience sooner or later.

Starting with the regular cleaning routine itself, never use water to clean the surface. Unless the floor manufacturer (if you have a prefinished floor) or the floor finish manufacturer (for floors finished on site) allows the use of damp mops, you’re only going to cause a lot of grief to the protective coating and in no time, to the wood underneath it.

Once done, the floor would experience many negative side effects such as buckling and crowning, as well as the surface losing its color and shine. On a side note, don’t use domestic dust and surface cleaners, but rather what is recommended by the manufacturer of your floor. If the latter is unknown, use a generic hardwood floor cleaner that’s designed for the type of floor finish you have.

When it comes to dealing with stains, like from a pet or ink, the sooner you react the better. You would almost always have to use a very fine or fine steel wool to take off the finish away (wax or polyurethane) before you can reach the contamination.

Use a recommended wood floor cleaner and a bit of mineral spirits to remove the stain, wait until the area dries up, then rewax and buff, or refinish. Remember to never use wax on a surface finish. Sometimes if you spot the problem too late and it goes too deep, replacing the boards might be your best option.

To deal with minor scratches, just rewax if it’s a wax finish floor and buff. For surface finishes, use a touch-up kit made for surface finished floors. You can find the latter in most specialized shops. Food stains and chunks need to be blotted lightly with a damp but well wrung out cloth, then scrapped off carefully without damaging the surface. Plastic tools do a better job in this case.

Certain oils and grease can be very dangerous to a floor, so make sure you take care of them immediately. For wax finished floors, soak up the substance thoroughly, then blot the spot with a clean cloth and follow up with a dry cloth to remove the residue. Repeat one or more times if necessary. Use mineral spirits and trisodium phosphate (if you have) on a soft cloth to rub the area gently until the problem disappears.

Lastly, mildew and mold are constant enemy of houses with higher humidity levels or leakages. To take care of these on a hardwood floor with both wax and surface finishes just use an approved wood floor cleaner.

Additionally for wax finishes, you may have to rub the spot with a finer steel wool, then rewax and rebuff. Burns and marks are the least you’d want to see on your floor, so if that happens consider replacing the strips or planks if it goes too deep. Otherwise you can try to resand and refinish.

Hardwood flooring adds elegance and character to any home. It is one of the favorite floorings among homeowners. Your reading this article indicates more than just a mild interest in hardwood flooring.

Cleaning actually begins with prevention. By adding area rugs or mats at every entryway, you can collect the grit and dirt that is often tracked into the home. These particles of grit and dirt are like sandpaper and will scratch the flooring.

Be sure that you also use mats in areas where water can be splashed. One example is in front of a kitchen sink.

A good quality broom and regular sweeping helps to keep those particles of dirt that make it past the mats picked up.

Vacuum cleaners on a hard floor setting so the beater bar does not come on, can be useful to pick up dirt from between the boards and in other places that are hard to reach. After the dirt particles are removed, buffing helps to restore the shine to your floor.

A flat terrycloth mop is excellent for cleaning hardwood floors. Choose a wood floor cleaner that will get rid of tough stains but not dull your floor. The cleaner can also be used to remove scuff marks. Use a cloth and light pressure. A damp towel will usually remove sticky spots.

Two types of cleaners that should not be used on hardwood flooring are those contain ammonia or oil soaps. These types of cleaners make for a dull finish and may make it difficult to recoat the floor later.

You should never use a wet mop on hardwood floors. The excess water can cause swelling of the wood, which can cause the flooring to buckle, splinter or crack.

Hardwood flooring that is finished with polyurethane should never be waxed, as the wax build up will actually dull the shine of the floor.

When hardwood floors beginning to show excessive wear, they may need to be screened and recoated. This process prepares the polyurethane that is already on the floor to accept a new top coat of polyurethane and can rejuvenate the life of a hardwood floor. It will also cause your flooring to last even longer.

If you have waited until the damage has become severe, then you may need to sand the flooring and refinish with polyurethane. This is a labor intensive job and requires the use of orbital and belt sanders with heavy grit sandpaper. If you screen and recoat, the process may be avoided.

Exposing your floors to sunlight accelerates the change in coloring of your flooring. Homes with hardwood floors should have good window treatments to help to slow the process. Be cautious about leaving area rugs in the same spot without rotating, as this can allow light or dark spots to develop on your floor.

All furniture legs should be padded with felt to avoid scratching the flooring. When moving heavy objects across the floor, you will need to be careful that you do not scuff the floor.

When talking about cleaning hardwood floorings, there are several tips if followed would give your hardwood floorings longer life span.

There are essentially day-to-day cleaning, 3-monthly care and preventive measures.

Day-to-day CleaningIt is important to know that every day some amount of dirt and grit is brought into your home by the shoes. The floors will accumulate more dirt for larger families. More often than not the dirt is deposited at the entrance of the main door as well as in the kitchen.Sweeping the floor with a soft broom should be done. If the dirt is not swept away it will finally scratch the floors and eventually make the surface become dull. Do this on a daily basis or on alternate days. For better results a vacuum floor cleaner should be used. Nevertheless please follow the manufacturer’s procedures and use the manufacturer supplied bristles or accessories.Water is the biggest enemy of hardwood flooring. If water or liquids (coffee or other beverages) are present and not cleaned off immediately, they will seeps through the tiny openings on the floor and cause warping.

Quarterly cleaning Daily cleaning would not completely remove the accumulated grease. You may want to clean the flooring with commercially available cleaners once every three months. Always remember to follow the vendor’s procedures when using a chemical cleaner. Cleaning with regular detergents or vinegar solution is NOT advisable because these solutions will strip and dull the surface finishing of the wood floors if used for a long time. A word of caution here is some hardwood floors are are finished with polyurethane which give them a shiny and glossy appearance. In such case you might need to buff the floors with wax. here again the same rule applies: follow the vendor’s recommended procedures.

Preventive maintenance In order to protect your precious hardwood floors from major damage, prevention is better than cure:

1. You shouldnot pull furniture or objects on the floorings2. Use protective pads under the legs of table or chairs to prevent scratching3. Avoid wearing high heels or heavy shoes or spiked shoes on the wood floorings as they will damage the floor permanently4. Always place carpet runners, floor mats or rug on high traffic areas such as main entrance or in the kitchen5. Always remove spills as quickly as possible

In conclusion your wood floors will last a long time if you do day-to-day cleaning, quarterly cleaning and apply some common sense preventive measures.

A great looking hardwood ground is an asset to each and every residence. But nonetheless tough wearing this type of floor is, you will find that it eventually requirements some tender loving care to obtain it again to searching its finest again.

Whenever you take a look at your floor and also you know it requirements some further remedy, you might be pondering that you can just recoat it. After all this is the main amount of protection the floor may have, so why not just give it what it requirements?

The cause we say this is due to the fact the coating around the ground will eventually wear via. If you stay on top of things then you’ll certainly be able to simply recoat the ground each now after which.

But if you have left it too long and the coating has began to truly wear absent for probably the most component, you may need to consider sanding it down after which recoating it. So should you haven’t already left it too long, ensure you recoat it now just before the original coating actually starts to put on absent.

Right here is another stage to consider – what sort of condition will be the real ground in?

It is unusual but many people tend to focus on what the coating is like around the ground, as opposed to the floor alone. The coating is very important of course because it’s there to protect the wood. It could prevent surface harm taking location.

But it cannot stop all damage – for instance if you dropped something really hefty on the floor you would be really probably to dent the wooden alone. If this occurs you’ll see that dent. Similarly if you spill something around the ground and it does not get cleaned up immediately, the stain will stay no matter how well you recoat the ground when it wants it.

So you need to think about what is beneath the coating – what kind of situation the ground by itself is in. If you have dents, nicks, scrapes and stains down there, it’s vital to comprehend that all of those issues will nevertheless be there whenever you have meticulously and painstakingly recoated your floor.

There are some straightforward practices that you can instill into your household cleaning routine to help keep your hardwood floors clean. Hardwood floors are becoming more well-liked to homeowners because they give the house a really clean and modern look.

As a quick way to keep your hardwood floors clean, you can just sweep the area with a soft bristled broom. Sand, lint, and other debris usually locate themselves scattered about hardwood floors, so a easy sweeping of the area ought to remove such elements and give your rooms a clean look.

Aside from sweeping your hardwood floors, you can also use a vacuum to help maintain your floors clear of debris. This is an efficient cleaning tool if you are frequently short on time. If you do plan on using a vacuum cleaner, then make sure that you use a soft brush attachment just before vacuuming your hardwood floors; this will help to reduce any scratches that a typical vacuum could leave behind.

If you have area rugs or hallway runners covering your hardwood floors, then you really should contemplate vacuuming them typically as well. Debris will frequently turn into intertwined with the fibers of the rugs that run the risk of scratching your hardwood floors if the debris filters down far enough, particularly if your rugs are in a high traffic area. In addition, when you are sweeping your hardwood floors, take a few moments to sweep underneath your rugs, the less debris on your floors then the less chance of accidental scratching.

It is also crucial that you clean up any liquid spills as soon as they take place. Hardwood flooring is essentially wood and liquid has a tendency to warp and otherwise deteriorate this sort of material. Whilst little droplets of liquid may possibly not be too harmful to your hardwood floors, you really should get into the habit of cleaning up any liquid spills immediately. If you have a big family, make positive that they are conscious of the damage water can trigger to hardwood floors and it actually only takes a few minutes to wipe up a liquid mess. Make certain when you are cleaning up liquid spills that you are utilizing a soft cloth, any kitchen towel really should work just fine. Very dry and scratchy towels may possibly damage your floors if you use them to wipe up your spills.

Not protecting your hardwood floors from your furniture could be result in unintended scratches or blemishes. At most hardware stores you can discover furniture pads that can be placed underneath the legs of your couches, coffee table, end tables, and any other type of furniture that might damage your floors. This simple investment could save you and your floors a lot of grief. If you are in the habit of re-arranging your furniture usually, then you must certainly take into account getting furniture pads. They protect your floors and they make rearranging a lot easier because your furniture will be able to slide across your floor with greater ease.

Buffing and waxing your floor on occasion will also keep them clean and looking nice. Please contact the manufacturer of your hardwood flooring to discover about the correct procedure for properly buffing and waxing your floors.

Depending on where you happen to own a home in the united states, due to what has happened to the economy over the past few years, and many home owners have seen the values of their properties fall well below what they were worth just a few years ago. This has made it difficult for someone trying to sell their home in a downward spiraling market.

But if you are looking to sell your home in today’s competitive market place, then you need to really pay attention to all of the little details of your home. But there is one detail that is a major component of your home, which is very easily overlooked, and that component is the floors that run throughout your house.

Of all the things in a home that can make a dramatic impact on every room in it, changing flooring that is already present in your home can be vitally important to the overall look of your house.

Changing the flooring of one’s home can instantly add value to a home that has not seen many improvements for several years. Doing this adds more value to a home when one is trying to sell it, especially in a very competitive housing market. And the most important decision is just what type of flooring do you install. There are many choices available that will do the job rather effectively.

Carpeting

Adding new carpeting throughout a home certainly can have a dramatic effect on every room that carpeting is installed in. Plush shag carpeting installed in a living space such as a family room can bring a touch of warmth to the room, and certainly has the added bonus of everyone wanting to walk on the rug in their bare feet. There are many different types of carpeting available today, and many offer stain free protection so that if you or another family member were to have an accidental spill, cleaning the carpet is easily accomplished.

Hardwood Floors

Everyone loves hardwood flooring. There are many different varieties of natural hardwoods available from your choice of several different manufacturers and dealers. Hardwood floors can run from just a run of the mill clear Oak hardwood to an exotic wood such as Santos Mahogany finish. Many real estate brokers agree that when it comes to the addition of new flooring in a home, hardwood floors just seem to add incredible value and give the home owner the best return on investment for every dollar spent.

Ceramic and Porcelain Tiles

Another way to add value to your home and make it more attractive to potential buyers is with the use of Porcelain and Ceramic tiles. There are many different varieties and styles of tiles to choose from including natural tiles such as slate that come in wide array of colors to a glazed Jade Taupe Porcelain tile. These tiles can be placed anywhere in your home, such as a kitchen or of course in a bathroom.

And speaking of a tiled bathroom floor, another way to get the most out of a tiled bathroom floor without having to go over a budget is by cleaning and in some cases even removing the old grout and just simply re-grouting a tiled bathroom floor, and just resurfacing the already existing tiles.
