Hardwood floor installation takes a lot of work, but you can save your self a lot of funds by learning how to do it your self. There are even prefinished strips of wood flooring that you can use in order to make the job less difficult. Whichever technique you select, the whole process of installing hardwood floors is very comparable, so this article will be covering just the basics that will apply to most approaches.

You begin to install hardwood floors with only the bare subfloor. For the most part, you can select whoever sort of wood you like for your floor, but red oak is commonly chosen simply because it looks nice and is relatively inexpensive. It is recommended that you store your flooring in the exact same climate that it will be installed in, this way you do not have to worry about it expanding or contracting.

The very first official step of hardwood floor installation is to lay your planks down perpendicular to the wall joists. It is a great thought to mark this by placing a reference line to indicate the end of all boards. When performing this keep in mind to leave a gap of 1 half inch around the whole perimeter of the room in case you will need to expand later. For the initial pieces, it is crucial that you pick the longest and straightest boards. You will have to drill holes in the face of the planks that can’t be reached utilizing your floor stapler utilizing a 3/8 inch diameter bit. As you will quickly find out, it is significantly easier to install hardwood floors when you use a stapler.

The next step to installing hardwood floors is the actually laying down of the boards for your new floor. It will make things easier on you if you pick a location for your very first board that is parallel to the reference line you made earlier. You can fasten the 1st board with screws if you prefer, placing the holes directly over the floor joists. On occasion you may possibly will need to cut the boards so that they will fit. Be certain to use a perfectly straight piece of flooring to make certain that your pieces are aligned. You can start making use of your pneumatic stapler after you have secured the 1st row.

The final step of hardwood floor installation is to finish laying the boards, beginning with the second row. It is recommended that you maintain the end joints 6 inches apart on rows of boards that are appropriate next to every other. There are numerous different strategies you can use when laying out the boards for your hardwood floor installation which is beyond the scope of this article to cover. So prior to you begin, this is a topic that you will want to make positive that you have researched and are comfortable with.

Installing hardwood flooring adds beauty and value to any home, but custom hardwood installation can make your house look even better. Get the absolute most out of your home with custom wood flooring!

Whether you’re building a new home or exploring options for a major remodeling project, installing custom wood flooring can put the finishing touch on your space. Offering the elegance of natural wood and the distinctive appearance of one-of-a-kind beauty, custom hardwood flooring installation can create visual interest, emphasize architectural details, and all around make your home look it’s absolute best.

While hardwood installation of any kind will add value and beauty to your house, custom wood flooring will take your home’s style to a whole new level!Custom hardwood flooring is a catchall term for several types of unique wood floor looks. The two most popular options are stencil staining and combining several wood species to create attractive patterns. The more traditional of the two, the latter uses contrasting wood types inlaid into the main wood floor to create borders, patterns, and medallions.

Often mixing distinctive woods like cherry or the more exotic purple heart wood with paler woods like oak and maple, custom inlaid wood floors are a permanent, gorgeous way to highlight architectural features like fireplaces and window seats as well as create focal points in foyers, hallways, and other rooms.

Custom staining is an affordable way to get the look of inlaid wood floors for less. This type of custom wood flooring uses stencils and stains to create the appearance of inlaid woods: by essentially painting borders and medallions on a floor that’s made from one type of wood species, you can create the illusion of several wood types. And, in addition to the reduced cost, custom staining also means that if you ever tire of your custom border or medallion, all you have to do is have the floor sanded and refinished and you can start over fresh. (With inlaid floors, you have to tear out the whole floor if you ever want a change!)

No matter what type of custom hardwood floors you choose for your home, they’re sure to add that special finishing touch that sets your home apart from the rest. Take your decor to the next level with custom hardwood flooring installation.

Do you currently have carpeting, tile or linoleum on your floors? Are you ready to make a change from dingy, cracked, or worn flooring to clean, shiny and durable? Wood is an excellent, resilient and long lasting flooring material; not to mention it is beautiful and inviting. Even the most neglected and worn hardwood can be restored, making it cost effective.

Years ago, hardwood floors were difficult and challenging to install. Without the proper knowledge the end result could be costly and disastrous. Although it is best to have a flooring professional install your wood floors, you can do it yourself. There are many “Do-it-yourself” books to guide you thru the process that you can find at any home improvement store.

In choosing your floors, you should consider your affordability as well as durability. You should match the style and color to the room where it is being installed. You can ask for a sample to take home for comparison. Take into consideration how much traffic flows thru that room also. If it is a high traffic area, such as your kitchen, you will want a more durable type of wood. There are several different types of wood, colors, styles and finishes. For example, solid wood flooring such as oak is susceptible to moisture damage. You need to store solid wood flooring indoors and keep it covered until you plan to install it. Wood swells when moisture is absorbed. Installing floors that are swollen will create gaps once the moisture evaporates.

Your flooring will need to have a level, flat, and clean surface to be installed. Be sure to prepare your floor for installation by removing the old flooring, adhesives, and nails. Fill any holes left from nails that were removed and remember to sand the area filled. Sweep any debris left from removal process. Also remove the baseboards prior to laying the wood floor. Insert a thin piece of scrap between the wall and your prying tool, as to not damage the wall when removing the baseboards. When installing the floor around the perimeter of the room, allow a gap for expansion (the baseboard will hide it).

Now that you are ready to install, begin by applying the recommended adhesive and flooring irregular shaped areas of the room, such as door ways. Using a chalk line can be helpful in keeping your floor boards straight and even. Some floors are made to interlock together, so the process is simplified and takes less time. You can find the entire process from start to finish in home improvement books and videos. Also ask your local home improvement store for any suggestions, they sometimes offer professional lessons for different projects.

If installed correctly, the end result will be worth it. Hard wood floors are gorgeous, affordable, and long-lasting. Hardwood floors add value to your home, increasing as your home does. It will give your home a refreshed look and is low maintenance. The change will be drastically noticeable and you will be glad you made it.

You’ve made the decision to install hardwood flooring into your home. Moreover, you’ve decided to handle the project yourself rather than spending the money on professional installers. You’re understandably excited (maybe a little nervous) about doing the job correctly the first time. As with any home improvement project that you undertake, the more prepared you are, the better the outcome.

With that in mind, we’ll explore some of the tools of the trade. Assuming you want to avoid the labor-intensive “nail and hammer” approach used by installers long ago, you’ll need to acquire a stapler or nailer to fasten the nails. You’ll also want to make sure you have a proper subfloor in place. We’ll introduce you these tools and others to help prepare you for the job at hand.

Making Sure You Have A Proper Subfloor

In many ways, your finished wood floors will only be as good as your subfloor. This is the portion that lies directly underneath your strips, planks, or parquets. Your nails will fasten the two together. If your subfloor is unsuitable, you can expect your flooring to creak, groan, and pop down the road.

If your subfloor is concrete, make sure it’s dry before laying your hardwood floors. Moisture can require up to two months to dissipate; if the concrete doesn’t dry thoroughly, it will cause problems later. Concrete is commonly used for sub-flooring in homes that lack a basement. Otherwise, wood is used.

Aside from being dry, it’s important that your subfloor is level and of a suitable grade given the variety of wood you’re using for the flooring. It’s also important that you stick to either concrete or wood. Don’t use particle board or pressboard. Neither are strong enough to provide the necessary support for the nails.

Tools For Fastening Your Nails

Long before nailing tools were powered by compressed air, they required the installer to use his strength to drive the nails with a hammer. To suggest it was tough, painstaking work is an understatement. Fortunately, those tools have been all but replaced with pneumatic fasteners. Rather than requiring you to hit (with precise aim) the nail in order to seat it into the boards, these air-powered nailers and staplers only require a small tap. The majority of the work is handled by the compressed air.

So, which tool should you use: a pneumatic nailer or a stapler? The answer depends on whom you ask. A lot of experts suggest that staplers are problematic because they fasten the hardwood floors too tightly against the subfloor. That creates creaking. On the other hand, some people feel that staplers fasten the nails more securely than a cleat nailer and thus, do the job more effectively. In the end, you should ask the manufacturer of the wood you’re using which fastener is more appropriate.

Nails, Staples, And Mallets

The nails that are seated by pneumatic nailers have a barb-like cut on their end. When they’re driven through the wood board and subfloor, the barbs grab and hold the two layers together. Staples work differently. Their ends are treated with a special resin that improves their gripping ability. When the staples are engaged by a pneumatic stapler and driven through the solid wood and subfloor, the resulting friction activates the resin and gives it a glue-like quality.

Even though you’re using an air-powered fastener, you’ll need to have a mallet within reach. One side will be made from hard rubber while the other side is made from metal. The rubber end can be used to correct mild bowing in your strips or planks. The metal end is there simply to balance the weight.

Those are the main tools you’ll need to install your hardwood floors. You’ll also want to have glue, a tape measure, and a saw nearby for quick measurements and fixes. Equipped with the above instruments, you’re ready to start the installation.

When considering radiant heat, the reluctance to install hardwood floors over radiant heat systems was from the original technology, launched more than 40 years ago.

With radiant heat, to compensate for poor insulation, radiant heat temperatures were higher than normal causing excessive expansion and contraction in hardwood floors, which resulted in damage to hardwoods and a builder’s reputation.

Today, faultless radiant heat installations of fine hardwood flooring are completed over radiant floor heating.

To be honest, installing hardwoods over radiant heating systems is really no different from laying a typical hardwood floor.

Although the temperature of radiant floor heating will not harm the wood floor, a change in moisture will cause various hardwood flooring to warp, buckle or gap.

As the temperature rises, the moisture content generally decreases, and the moisture is removed causing the wood to shrink and gaps to occur between the boards. With lower temperatures the moisture returns and the gaps close.

When radiant heat is added to any floor it’s important to pay close attention to the moisture levels.

Your hardwood floor installer, and radiant heating systems contractor, should be aware of the special considerations required when using radiant heat in conjunction with hardwood floors.

When combined with radiant heat, many contractors underestimate the time it takes for concrete to properly cure. Usually, when the concrete looks dry the flooring is installed, however concrete needs to dry slowly and can take up to 90 days. Knowing the exact moisture content is an essential part of quality control within the floor installation process.

Once the sub-floor, tubing and climate controls have been installed, run your radiant heating systems for at least 72 hours to balance the moisture content.

Your radiant heat and hardwood floors need some special moisture considerations. Make sure your installer has a hand-held electrical tool, called a moisture meter. It measures the moisture in concrete and in the wood floor materials, giving the percentage of relative humidity.

Make certain the hardwood flooring, the storage space and the concrete slab are normalized or acclimated to the finished room before the hardwood is installed.

With a hardwood installation, a moisture barrier helps maintain an even moisture balance in the floor. Seasonal gapping is quite normal but in the fall try to progressively turn on heat before the first really cool day arrives. Also, it’s important for the hardwood floorboards in the floor to be laid perpendicular to the tubing, not parallel.

The key to a good hardwood installation when combined with radiant heat is to pay close attention to the moisture. Low, even temperature distribution is the key to avoiding problems when radiant heat is involved.

A well-laid hardwood floor is one of the most beautiful, long wearing and aesthetically pleasing flooring options out there, there is no doubt about that. When it comes to hardwood floor installation, however, most people think that it is a difficult process. Although it is not an easy job to install your wood flooring correctly, but there are a few tips that can make it a little easier.• Make sure that the surface on which you will be doing your installation is clean, dry, and level. • Stacking your hardwood floors in your home for a few days before you begin your project will allow it to adjust to your home’s humidity level, and make installation easier.• Make sure that when you install your floor, it includes a layer of asphalt felt, which will make the flooring easier to install, and protect both it and the substrate.• Make sure that you make allowance for a table saw, circular saw or power miter, which will make it easier to cut the boards to the correct length.• Make sure that no joint in any row is closer than 6 inches to a joint in the adjacent row, and that end pieces in any row are at least 8 inches long.• If your wood floor will butt up against an adjacent floor of a different level, it’s a good idea to fit a reducer strip. Even a small change in level can cause people to trip. The truth is, while wood floor installation is possible, it can be tricky for those who have not done it before. It’s too easy to damage the flooring itself, it can be tricky to deal with a surface that’s not level or a room that’s out of square, and laying out and fitting the flooring can be a tricky task.Unless you are a fairly skilled carpenter, or know someone who is, and who is willing to assist you, it may be an idea to look for contractors in your area that specialise in hardwood floor installation, and perhaps buy the materials yourself. That way, you can still save on the cost of the materials, and get the benefit of a professional installation.

Many people prefer wood floors because of their austere beauty and durability. This article will provide you with a brief introduction on how to install hardwood flooring to get you started.

Wood floors come in various grades and widths, so this will be one of your first decisions when you are ready to install hardwood flooring. One such decision will be to choose between strip flooring which usually comes in thin pieces and plank flooring which is a bit thicker. There are also systems devised in order to rank the wood in quality.

For example, the most common type of wood for floors, Oak, is graded as the following:

• Clear – very few blemishes and character marks.

• Select – features a light grain, has few blemishes, and is easy to match.

• Number 1 Common – will have a variety of hues, and some marks as well.

• Number 2 Common – has quite a few character marks such as knots, blemishes, and discolorations.

The next step to hardwood floor installation is to choose between prefinished and unfinished wood. In most cases you will prefer the former as it has already been sanded, finished, and otherwise prepared for installation. The only time you will choose unfinished is for custom projects or when you already have some wood flooring installed and you have to match it.

If you do choose to buy unfinished wood flooring, be careful when transporting it though as getting it wet will cause it to swell. When you are ready to install hardwood flooring, one of the first steps in the process is the fitting and nailing of the planks. Before undertaking this project be aware that you will need intermediate carpentry experience and the right tools.

First you remove the baseboards, being careful not to break them. Then place the edges overtop one another, roughly 4 to 6 inches apart, and glue the seams down. The flooring is usually laid out parallel to the room’s longest wall.

Now lay the longest pieces at the doorways and use the shortest pieces all over the room, being careful not to have them all together. Now, in order to allow the boards to get larger and smaller naturally, you will want to use spacers between the planks.

Now, gently insert the first set of planks into position, taking careful attention to place the groove side next to the wall. You will want to nail through the face of the planks, this way it will be hidden under the base board.

You should also angle a nail over the tongue every 10 to 12 inches in strips and 5 to 8 inches for planks. The final step in hardwood floor installation is to tap the following planks into place. You can use a floor stapler to bind the nail pieces though the edge of the tongue.

Now install the last row, using a pry bar to tighten if necessary. The entire process can be long and difficult if you have not had much experience, but it can save you quite a bit of money to do it yourself.

When searching for flooring for your house which is not only sturdy but good-looking, wood is the best option. Hardwood flooring provides a sensible solution for just about every room of your house. Hardwood is not just a good flooring choice for the main rooms of the property, but for kitchens, baths, and more.

If the hardwood floor installation will be done by the owner, it is best to use planks that have already been finished. Unless you are an expert at operating a drum sander, you would not want to try using unfinished wood. The sander can leave grooves in the floor if not perfectly done.

The wood floorboards should be stored inside the home for a couple days prior to them being used. This is so that the wood can get used to the humidity inside the house. Hardwood planks should be placed across the joists in the floor.

After examining the sub-flooring, take the shoe moulding off the walls, sweep up any dirt, and replace the flooring. Vapor barrier paper will have to be laid down, with 4 inches overlapping each edge. Fasten the paper to the sub-flooring For around , you can purchase rolls of 15 pound tar paper or felt. Mark the location of the joists with a lead pen.

Place a long board against your longest wall, and prep it for pilot holes, by utilizing a chalk line. Drill holes past the board and sub-floor and in the joist. Face nail each board of the first row, and set them with a nail set. Make certain that the groove side of the boards faces the walls.

Covering up your nail holes with matching wood putty as you work is a great idea. This way you will not have to look for the holes later on. After face nailing the whole first row and patching, place the boards for the next row.

Notice how the wood flooring latches piece to piece. Using the same methods for every row and cover the entire floor with the wood planks. Leave a 3/8 inch space between the last row and the wall to allow for expansion. Clean up any dust and dirt and finally replace the shoe moulding.

If you live in Miami or South Florida in general and are considering replacing your floors with wood floors, take the time to do your homework on whether you should choose hardwood flooring or laminate wood flooring. While you may prefer the look of a hardwood floor over laminate wood, there are differences in the installation, maintenance and wear and tear of each type of flooring. Considering the subtropical climate in South Florida, one particular wood flooring option may emerge as the right choice.

Hardwood Floors

It is true that hardwood floors are made out of real wood and therefore have the look of real wood floors. In northern states, hardwood floors work, but the problem with installing hardwood floors in South Florida is the humidity. Hardwood flooring retains moisture, which can cause it to warp. This is not to mention the expense of hardwood floors over laminate wood floors or that installing hardwood floors is more complicated than installing laminate wood flooring. Harder installation also means you’re not only going to pay more for the materials, but you’re also going to pay more for the installation.

Laminate Floors

While laminate wood floors are not real or natural wood, these types of wood floors have several benefits, especially in South Florida. The wood material look alike used to create laminate floors tends to be water-resistant, which is a big bonus in South Florida with the humidity, rain, flooding and hurricanes. Second, wood laminate is easier to install than hardwood floors, so you are not only going to pay less for the materials but you’re also going to save on the installation. The downside of these floors is that the wood laminate can chip, but it does not scratch and dent like hardwood floors do.

Hardwood vs. Laminate Wood Floors

Hardwood

Moisture: Humidity and moisture warps the wood (HINT: South Florida is VERY humid.).

Installation: Difficult

Durability: Dents, scratches and fades, but can be refinished.

Longevity: 80 years

Laminate

Moisture: Most are water-resistant, but check with the manufacturer or supplier.

Installation: Easier to install than hardwood and comes with options for installation, including glue-less.

Durability: Does not dent and scratch, but can chip. Refinishing is possible with some wood laminates.

Longevity: 20 years

In less humid and moist areas of the country hardwood flooring is a fine choice. With the high humidity and water issues South Florida deals with on a daily basis, wood laminate definitely pulls out ahead as the leading choice for wood flooring.
