When you begin to work with hardwood flooring, you will find you encounter both dark and light shades. While many people are aware of how to decorate with the lighter version, there are some important concepts to remember with dark wood as well. The goal is to create a room that appears more open and brighter with some simple steps.

To begin with, you should consider a paint that has just a slight hue to it. This could be something as simple as a white paint that you’ve added a gray or blue tint to. Use this on the walls. When it comes time to deal with the ceiling, paint it a semi-gloss white.

Because the darker wood will give the essence of the woods, consider finding a large painting, or creating a mural with a beautiful forest scene. It will instantly draw the attention of those that enter this room and give them something to focus on.

Since the room will have a need for more depth to connect with the hardwood floors, consider using accents. These include rugs that are bright in color as they will bring out the reds in the wood, or a light bamboo floor mat that will add texture to the room and a soft complementary color.  On this same note, consider adding green plants to the room as they can often give a depth to the room as well.

Finally, ensure that you have enough light in your room that the hardwood floors are given a nice depth to them. This can be simple fall fixtures you add or an amazing chandelier your hang high above it. The goal is to get as much light on the beautiful floor as possible, so every hue and marking in the wood can be seen.
